Every once in awhile I have a member make the conscious decision to step away from the community experience of our Guided Self-Practice classes and venture off to practice Adamantine® Yoga on their own.
To be honest, I’m always disappointed when this happens.
Although I intentionally designed this practice to empower people to independently continue progressing wherever life may take them, I truly value being an active part of that process.
Plus, there is such power in community. The collective energy of surrounding yourself with like-minded people, all striving to better themselves, in the sanctity of sacred space devoted to the practice of yoga, is challenging to replicate when your practice space at home is likely to be perforated by all sorts of distractions (think little people, big people, dogs and cats) that everyone’s personal environment inevitably brings.
I’ve actually observed that often times the further a practitioner travels on the path of Adamantine® Yoga, the more common it is for them to attend Guided Self-Practice simply for the purpose of being a part of our inspiring community.
I learned the value of this myself over the past year as I transitioned from practicing at home to becoming an active, daily participant in Guided Self-Practice. Even though I am an introvert at heart, and I really do love doing things by myself, I wouldn’t choose to practice alone if I had the opportunity to practice in a community like ours.
Here are a few things I’ve observed from my experience:
Our community is a valuable source of collective wisdom.
No individual practitioner has all of the answers, and it’s difficult to be objective about your own practice. Consulting with a teacher, or several teachers, or even fellow practitioners about the best way to progress is a valuable source of information.
Our community will help you to push your limits.
When you’re practicing alone it’s often easy to give up when things get hard. By surrounding yourself with other practitioners all working towards a similar goal, you’ll find the motivation and support to push yourself further than you ever could have done on your own.
Our community is inspiring.
Some days the challenging postures of Adamantine® Yoga seem truly impossible, but then you look across the room and someone is gracefully proving you wrong. There are so many inspiring people in our community, and without recognizing it, you’ve likely one of them for someone else.
Our community keeps you accountable.
Even if you are the most responsible person in the world, having to be accountable to others will up your game. People recognize when you’re in class, and they take notice when you’re not.
As a member of our Adamantine® Yoga community you are an important part of raising all of us up to a new level, and the work we do together to better ourselves positively impacts not just our own individual lives, but the lives of all of the friends, family and community members we impact each and every day.
Together we are stronger, we are smarter, and we are inspiring.
Trust me, I’m the last person I would have ever thought would be the voice for community practice, but it works. Going it alone is a necessary thing for some people, but if you have the opportunity, you should be in class.
